How can you only print 200 and right after the output code the json information is printed.response variable should already contain the json information when is printed. When you mean plain text file, do you mean that you see just one json line? If so, that is not a problem, it's just not prettified. Webresponse=$ (curl -isb -H "Accept: application/json" "http://host:8080/some/resource") Service response is of json type and on browser I could perfectly fine response. However curl response has other unwanted things (such as set-cookie, content-length header in this case) and sometimes the actual response is eaten up.
